Australian Crawl

From their start in 1979 to their demise only five years later, Australian Crawl stood as a bizarre anomaly against the largely punk and political scene Down Under. Essentially sculpted as the Melbourne Beach Boys, the Crawl's songs ranged from odes to Errol Flynn and Resort Girls to rousing singalongs like "Hootchie Gucci Fiorucci Mama," and their mash cover of the Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie." Consisting of James Reyne (lead vocals, piano), Guy McDonough (co-lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Bill McDonough (drums, percussion), Simon Binks (lead/acoustic/slide guitar), Paul Williams (bass), and Brad Robinson (rhythm guitar), the Crawl initially appeared to be little more than hedonistic surfers -- in Reyne's own words, "part of people's lives; a representation of the beach, the open air and good vibes." But their debut album, 1980's The Boys Light Up, also contained recountings of automobile accidents ("Indisposed") and vicious attacks against shallow materialists (the band's first single "Beautiful People"). Their combination of light, breezy tunes with significantly darker subtexts (not altogether unlike Brian Wilson's best material) left The Boys Light Up on the Aussie charts for no less than 104 weeks.

Ayers Rock

Ayers Rock were an Australian rock band which formed in August 1973. Ray Burton (guitar and vocals), Mark Kennedy (drums), and Duncan McGuire (bass), members of Leo de Castro and Friends, left to form the eponymous trio of Burton, McGuire & Kennedy. They added a guitarist, Jimmy Doyle, changed their name to Ayers Rock and invited Col Loughnan (saxophones and flutes) to join. The group signed with independent label Mushroom Records in December 1973. Burton left the following March, and was replaced by Chris Brown (guitar, vocals). With live appearances, coverage in print media and word of mouth the group had a high national profile despite little radio airplay, and journalists praised their musicianship, music, and live energy.

The band's first album, Big Red Rock (November 1974), received positive reviews and peaked at number 32 on the Australian Kent Music Report album chart. It featured mainstream rock and three longer, instrumental tracks which introduced progressive styles, including jazz fusion. Label owner Michael Gudinski promoted Ayers Rock in Los Angeles and they signed with A&M Records, the first Mushroom Records artists to sign with an international label. The United States release of Big Red Rock in February 1975 was followed by a tour there, later that year. The band played to large crowds, supporting major international artists (including Bachman–Turner Overdrive) before 35,000 people – the first Australian band to perform in large US stadiums.

Bakery

Bakery were a progressive hard rock band formed in early 1970 in Perth by two New Zealand-born musicians, Hank Davis on drums and Eddie McDonald on bass guitar – both were ex-members of Avengers. The line-up was completed by Mal Logan on keyboards (ex-Rebels, a New Zealand band), Peter Walker on guitar (ex-Jelly Roll Bakers) and John Worrall on vocals and flute. Logan soon left and, by October, he was a member of Healing Force and, later, in Chain and Little River Band. By mid-1970, Bakery's Davis, McDonald and Walker were joined by Rex Bullen on keyboards (Bitter Lemons) and Tom Davidson on vocals. Worrall had left for Ssarb and in 1972 was a founding member of Fatty Lumpkin.

Bakery's debut album, Rock Mass for Love, was issued in August 1971 on Astor Records which, according to Australian rock music historian Ian McFarlane, had been recorded live at a Mass "held at St George's Cathedral on 21 March 1971" and was "not indicative of the band's style of progressive hard rock". The group released two singles, "Bloodsucker" (February 1971) and "No Dying in the Dark" (July), before Mark Verschuer (Barrelhouse) replaced Davidson on vocals. "No Dying in the Dark" was a top ten hit on the Perth singles chart. The band's influences were Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin.
And Peter Walker was a brilliant guitarist, great memories.

Bee Gee's

It's not well-known that the Bee Gees wrote many songs between 1963 and 1967 that were covered by Australian artists, but never recorded by the group. Most of those were solo Barry Gibb compositions, but there were a few songs that Maurice Gibb co-wrote with Spin Records chief Nat Kipner as well. Thirty-one of these rare efforts that the Gibbs gifted to others are assembled on this Australian compilation. All are original versions, and none were recorded by the Bee Gees themselves (indeed many were never covered again). That makes this quite a catch for devoted Bee Gees collectors, especially considering that the Bee Gees themselves played support roles on some of these sessions.

Bev Harrell

Petite (4'9") blonde pop vocalist Bev Harrell was one of the most popular female solo singers in Australia in the late 1960s. Bev began her career on radio, starting out when she was just six in the children's radio talent series Kangaroos on Parade in her hometown of Adelaide, South Australia.

She started performing as a pop vocalist as a hobby in 1965 while she was still at school. She appeared as a guest singer at Adelaide suburban dances with local bands such as The Harts and The Vibrants. In 1966 she joined Barrie McAskill as co-lead singer of the reformed The Clefs, which was led by Tweed Harris (who subsequerntly founded Groove) but when The Clefs relocated to Melbourne later in the year Bev decided to stay in Adelaide. Eventually she was spotted by promoter Ron Tremaine who offered to become her manager. Under his guidance she began to attract more bookings and soon turned professional.

In the mid-'60s Bev moved to Australia's pop mecca, Melbourne, with her new manager and boyfriend, Adelaide accountant Daryl Sambell, and she soon became a regular on television pop shows including Bandstand and Kommotion. After signing with EMI Bev recorded eight Singles for their HMV label and five for their Columbia label. Many of Bev's EMI releases were produced by David Mackay, who also produced Johnny Farnham and The Twilights.

Boom Crash Opera

Originally a five-piece formed in Melbourne in 1985, Australian rock band Boom Crash Opera, like many before them, got their grounding from the pub rock circuit. Their striking debut blended the muscular rock of "Listen Like Thieves"-period INXS with an almost English melodic richness not dissimilar to Tears for Fears. Power vocalist Dale Ryder was backed by trademark chant style vocals from the other bandmembers, including group co-founders and writing partners guitarist/bassist Richard Pleasance and guitarist Peter Farnan (credited also as executive producers), alongside producer Alex Sadkin, who tragically died shortly after he finished working on the band's 1987 self-titled debut.

Daryl Braithwaite

As the lead singer of one Australia's most popular acts of the '70s, teen pop/rock outfit Sherbet, Daryl Braithwaite found concurrent success as a solo artist, taking his first single, a cover of "You're My World," to number one in 1974. Before the end of the decade, he charted seven more times as a soloist. After his band split in 1984, Braithwaite made a successful comeback in 1988 with the album Edge. Embracing a still highly melodic but more slickly produced adult contemporary sound, it took him to the top of Australia's album chart. He continued to find the charts with periodic album releases into the 2010s.

=======================================================================

Dragon

During the '70s, the notoriously decadent Dragon was among the biggest rock bands in New Zealand, gaining even greater success on the Australian circuit. Dragon's history begins with brothers Todd and Marc Hunter, natives of the North Island town of Taumarunui; from childhood on, the siblings performed professionally in their parents' jazz band, with Todd learning guitar and Marc picking up the drums. As the years passed, both Hunter brothers played in a variety of local bands, both together and independently; Dragon emerged in 1973 from the remnants of Staff, a group featuring Todd on bass, in addition to singer/pianist Graeme Collins, guitarist Ray Goodwin, and drummer Neil Reynolds. Personality conflicts quickly emerged, and soon the clean-living Collins was sacked by his hedonistic bandmates in favor of keyboardist Ivan Thompson. That left Dragon without a singer; however, the situation was quickly solved when Marc Hunter signed on as lead vocalist.

Judith Durham [R.I.P.]

Judith Durham is best known internationally for the four years she spent in the 1960s as the lead singer for the Seekers, the Australian-spawned folk quartet that, at one point, rivalled the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in chart records. Her own taste in music, before and since her involvement with the Seekers, however, runs more toward old-time jazz and big-band blues---left to her own devices, Durham showed herself more attuned to the work of Bessie Smith or Billie Holiday, or Helen Morgan, than Mary Travers or Joan Baez, and she also knows how to write a good song, and what made the best songs of the 1920s and '30s tick -- in an ideal world, she would've been in (and on the soundtracks of) the TV version of Pennies from Heaven or The Singing Detective. Her solo albums are few and far between, although they have begun appearing on compact disc, and she still records anew in the 1990s.

Judy Stone

Judith Anne Stone AM (born 1 January 1942) grew up in the Sydney suburb of Granville. She has two younger sisters, Joyce and Janice. From a young age she sang country music at home and her parents bought her a guitar, which she learned to play. In her early teens Stone entered and won a local talent contest and was noticed by an attendee, Reg Lindsay. By November 1956 she had joined his touring performance troupe, the Reg Lindsay Show, and stayed for 18 months. In July 1957 a reviewer of Lindsay's show in Cabramatta for The Biz wrote that "Little Judy Stone, of Granville, was very pleasing in her turn."

Kamahl

Kamahl is the name which, for over four decades, has identified the music and unique voice of a man who is one of the most sensational recording stars in Australian history. This is his inspiring and heart-warming story.

When he arrived in Adelaide from Malaysia as a Tamil Hindu schoolboy in 1953, after a tormented childhood under Japanese occupation, he was a black in an alien white country. A lone teenager speaking poor English, totally unfamiliar with Western music and his only skills were those on the sports fields.

Kevin Johnson

Australian singer/songwriter, born 1943 in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

Australian singer-songwriter Johnson is best remembered for his sole commercial hit, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life)’. Originally recorded in 1973 for Mainstream Records in his native territory, it gradually picked up airplay until in 1975 it was covered by Mac Davis, who took it into the Billboard Top 20 in the US. In consequence Jonathan King leased Johnson’s original version to his own UK Records label and was rewarded with a Top 30 success (number 23). It proved to be the artist’s only success and has not subsequently been anthologised.

Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue started her career as an actress on an Australian soap, but her charisma and highly adaptable talents as a pop singer soon landed her on top of the music world. The ride was bumpy, with high highs (chart-topping singles and albums, a brilliant collaboration with Nick Cave) and low lows (cancer, being dropped by record labels), but through it all, Minogue's sunny relatability never flagged. During the '80s, she released effervescent Stock, Aitken & Waterman-produced pop singles like "I Should Be So Lucky" and "The Loco-Motion" and cultivated a cheerful, cheeky persona. Once she broke away from the SAW machine, she was free to explore music styles and seek out a new, more adult image. She dipped her toes into trip-hop with "Confide in Me," slick dance-pop on "Better the Devil You Know," and pop/rock with guitars on "Some Kind of Bliss." She struck gold in 2001 with the huge electro-pop single "Can't Get You Out of My Head"; the album it landed on, Fever, was her most cohesive yet and kicked off a string of sleekly quirky albums that were inspired by synth pop and electronic music. By the 2010s, Kylie had become a major concert draw worldwide and her singles and albums reflected her new status, sounding huge and very poppy while never sacrificing artistic growth or stylistic restlessness. Along the way, she even recorded an album with an orchestra (2012's Abbey Road Sessions) and went pop-country (2018's Golden).

Lana Cantrell

A 1960s and '70s pop singer fluent in Broadway standards as well as AM pop hits, Lana Cantrell was born in Sydney, Australia. She was exposed to music at an early age, since her father was a jazz musician. Cantrell made her singing debut at the age of ten, and by her teens she had become a well-known TV personality in Australia. At 19 she traveled to the United States to do everything "humanly possible," which meant trying her hand in film and on-stage.

Cantrell moved to the United States in the early '60s, but her career began slowly in America. Finally, her personal vocal style began to shine through. She began performing on the nightclub and television circuit, and made a name for herself in the recording industry with a series of albums for RCA Victor during the late '60s.

Besides being a singer, Cantrell also spent time as an athlete. She was once the table-tennis champion of New South Wales, and her other interests have included yoga.

Linda George
Soulful and versatile singer Linda George, one of the most successful and respected Australian female vocalists of the 1970s, is best known for her 1974 hit "Mama's Little Girl" and after her period of pop success in the 1970s she went on to be an in-demand session singer and teacher.

Linda was born in the UK and emigrated with her family to Australia as a young teenager in the 1960s settling in Adelaide. By 1969 Linda had joined her first band Nova Express, a jazz-rock ensemble augmented by a horn section, similar to the influential US groups Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears, with the notable difference of having a female singer up front. Finding it hard to financially sustain a large ensemble Nova Express soon moved to Melbourne, Victoria, then the live music capital of Australia.

Little River Band

When Little River Band formed in 1975, Australia immediately took notice. The key bandmembers were already well known to Australians. Lead singer Glenn Shorrock had made his name in mid-'60s group the Twilights, a Beatles-sounding pop group that scored a national number one record with its version of the Velvelettes' "Needle in a Haystack." When the group broke up in 1969, Shorrock became lead singer of Axiom, whose "A Little Ray of Sunshine" is still an Australian classic rock staple. LRB's Beeb Birtles had been the bass player for a popular Twilights-era pop group called Zoot (Rick Springfield was a later member). When that group broke up, in search of musical credibility, Birtles auditioned as the bass player, but was instantly elevated to a front-line position alongside Graham Goble. Even LRB's manager was well-known. Glenn Wheatley had been the bassist with another of Australia's bands, and possibly its most legendary, the Masters Apprentices. Given all that background, when Shorrock and Birtles revealed they were forming a group with Goble, managed by Wheatley, it was major event in Australian music.

MPD Ltd

A short but sensational time in the spotlight ... a dynamic, gymnastic stage routine ... a spearhead act for the legendary Go!! label ... some incendiary singles ... such are the hallmarks by which we fondly remember the great beat trio that was MPD Ltd.

Formed in 1965, MPD Ltd arrived at their handle by combining the first name initials of core members Mike Brady, Pete Watson and Danny Finley. The "Ltd" appendage is also appropriate, since this band enjoyed only a short spell, albeit a very exciting and successful one while it lasted.

The band's meteoric rise to popularity is a classic example of serendipitous timing. With really only their friends The Easybeats to be considered as serious rivals, MPD Ltd emerged in a scene which saw The Aztecs embrace a decidedly MOR sound, The Whispers beginning to founder and stagnate, and exciting and innovative new bands like The Twilights and The Masters Apprentices yet to appear on the national musical horizon.

English-born bassist Pete Watson had for some time been a member of the venerable Melbourne instrumental outfit The Phantoms when, by one of those strange quirks of fate, the precocious fifteen year old amateur Mike Brady (also a British immigrant). Mike was playing with a high-school combo called The Hearsemen when he answered an ad for the position of guitarist. The Phantoms were looking for a temporary replacement for guitarist Dave Lincoln, who was on the sick-list, and Mike secured the gig.

NEV NICHOLLS

Born on the 16th September 1930 at Millthorpe in the central west of NSW, Nev Nicholls spent his childhood on a farm at Tallwood. Tallwood is not a town merely a district of small farms and in the depression years it was a grind for the whole family to eke out an existence. In 1952 he wen to Sydney to put down some custom recordings and was given an audition and then signed with Regal Zonophone. He cut 22 sides for Regal Zonophone, mostly his own material. He then appeared on “Australia’s Amateur Hour” and “Tim McNamara’s Talent Quest. In 1957 Nev did his first country tour with "The Reg Lindsay Show" up the north coast of NSW. On that show were: Reg Lindsay, Heather McKean, Rick & Thel Carey, Judy Stone and comedian Freddy Merideth also part of that troupe was Chad Morgan. In 1968 Nev got a call to audition for a night club job in Kings Cross and that led to a ten year stint at the famous "Texas Tavern". The Texas Tavern wasn't a job. It was an unforgettable event.

Playing for American servicemen on R&R from Vietnam, meeting celebrities who were making appearances at the Chevron Hotel across the street, and being accepted in the local population, as country music had never been accepted before. This is why Nev wrote "I Like Beer". People who made up part of Nev's band, "The Country Playboys" sounds like a who's who of the best performers in the country. In 1970 Nev released his first album 'Cross Country Music' on the Du Monde label. This was the vanguard of more than twenty albums in the years to follow.

In 1975 Nev won the Golden Guitar for Instrument Track of the Year with “Nashville Express” as Nev Nichol’s Country Playboys. In 1977 Nev was inducted into the Hands of Fame. From the late 70s through to 1988, The “Nev Nicholls National Roadshow” went to air throughout Australia on more than 90 radio stations- a weekly 2 hour show. He also launched a travelling show under the same name and he toured that show all around Australia starring at various times, Gary Brown, Phil Emmanuel, Lisa White, Debbie Lee Rae (now known as Kaye Payne) and Cowboy Bob Purtell.

As a further string to his bow Nev launched his own record label "Nicholls'N’Dimes" and in 1992 he was inducted into the "Australasian Country Music Roll Of Renown" at Tamworth. Nev had always been a prolific writer and besides recording vast numbers of his own songs he had also had . many covered by other artists among these are: Reg Lindsay, Chad Morgan, Frankie Davidson, Johnny Garfield, Terry Gordon, The Wayfarers, Truckin Stevens and by no means least his long time friend Lucky Grills. Lucky and Nev shared an album in 1998, a truckies album of course, titled "Ya Wanna Screw Driver". In 2002 Nev officially retired from country music entertaining. He was then inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Tamworth.

NORMIE ROWE

Normie Rowe
Normie Rowe is one of those perennially popular figures on the Australia music scene--given that his career has carried him from covering rock 'n roll standards like "Shakin' All Over" to playing Valjean in the Australian cast of Les Miserables, he might be most easily compared to Tommy Steele or Joe Brown in England, except that his music has crossed several rock genres, even brushing up against psychedelia during the late 1960's.

Ol '55 & Frankie J Holden

Ol '55 & Frankie J Holden
Ol’55 is a retro-fifties band from Sydney, Australia, formed in 1975. Ol’55 enjoyed enormous popularity with a style that bordered on parody. The band took its name from the Tom Waits song (as covered by The Eagles).

Under the direction of manager Glenn A Baker, ‘the Fives’ managed to combine novelty retro kitsch and clever theatrics with a keen sense of pop dynamics and an acute understanding of rock ‘n’ roll. Former chartered accountant Peter Bryan became larger-than-life motor mouth front man Frankie J Holden. Ol’ 55 members included: Frankie J Holden (Vocals), Rockpile Jones (Guitar & vocals), Jimmy Manzie (Bass & vocals), Pat Drummond (Guitar & vocals), Wilbur Wilde (Sax), Geoff Plummer (Drums), Geoff “Spud” Peterkin (Drums), Mike Raffone (Vocals), Bruce Allen (Sax)
Rob Drummond (Bass), Bob Tawney (Guitar), Terry Bellew (Bass).

Ray Brown and The Whispers

When Ray Brown died in August 1996, Australian rock & roll lost one of its unsung achievers.

After bursting onto the pop scene at Sydney’s legendary premier discotheque of the day, Surf City in 1964, Ray Brown and The Whispers became the most successful local recording act of 1965.

The band first entered Festival’s recording studios in Sydney early in 1965. Blessed with two outstanding guitarists, Al Jackson and Laurie Barclay, they were able to exploit the primitive conditions in the studio to the maximum.

What followed was an unprecedented year in Australian rock music history. Their first four singles reached #1 and three hit albums were produced.

Sherbert

Sherbet (aka Highway or The Sherbs) was one of the most prominent and successful Australian rock bands of the 1970s. The 'classic line-up' of Daryl Braithwaite on vocals, Tony Mitchell on bass guitar, Garth Porter on keyboards, Alan Sandow on drums, and Clive Shakespeare on guitar provided their teen-oriented pop style. In 1976 Shakespeare left and was soon replaced by Harvey James. Sherbet's biggest singles were "Summer Love" (1975) and "Howzat" (1976), both reaching number one in Australia. "Howzat" was also a top 5 hit in the United Kingdom. The band was less successful in the United States, where "Howzat" peaked at No. 61. As The Sherbs they also reached No. 61 in 1981 with "I Have the Skill". The group disbanded in 1984. Subsequent re-unions have occurred since 1998.

According to rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, "alongside Skyhooks, Sherbet was the most successful Australian pop band of the 1970s. With a run of 20 consecutive hit singles to its credit, and 17 albums that yielded ten platinum and 40 gold disc awards, Sherbet was the first domestic act to sell a million dollars' worth of records in Australia". In 1990 Sherbet were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame alongside classical composer and pianist, Percy Grainger. On 15 January 2011 Harvey James died of lung cancer. On 15 February 2012 Clive Shakespeare died of prostate cancer. On 23 January 2019 Denis Loughlin died after a long battle with cancer.

Skyhooks

In the mid-'70s, the Skyhooks shook and shaped Australian rock almost as much as the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

The glitter rock period of music did not sit well with Australian music, which is steeped in singers and bands having to be able to cut it in front of an audience. In the '70s, no self-respecting new Australian band would dare stand in front of an audience in make-up, glitter, and stacked heels and hope to be taken seriously. Melbourne's Skyhooks decided to parody that side of music rather than follow it. They dressed in an assortment of costumes, but what they wore had nothing to do with the music they performed, which was pure sex, drugs, and rock & roll, in songs that spoke about the world around them as it a was, right down to the names of the streets and suburbs the band and their audience came from. The songs, written by bassist Greg Macainsh, spoke louder than the costumes. Instead of being the intended parody the costumes only helped to separate Skyhooks from everything else happening in world and Australian rock.

He was known to record songs in the legacy of Australia, particularly of bush life and renowned Australian bush poets Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson that represented the lifestyle. The music genre was coined the "bush ballad", a style first made popular by Buddy Williams, the first artist to perform the genre in Australia, and also for his many trucking songs.

Slim Dusty "released more than a hundred albums, selling more than seven million records and earning over 70 gold and platinum album certifications". He was the first Australian to have a No. 1 international hit song, with a version of Gordon Parsons' "A Pub with No Beer".[1] He received an unequalled 45 Golden Guitar and an Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) award. Ted Mulry Gang

Though born in England, Martin Albert Mulry, aka Ted Mulry, found fame in Australia, first as a songwriter and balladeer and then as frontman for '70s rockers the Ted Mulry Gang, who were regulars on the country's pub rock circuit for a decade. Ted Mulry arrived in Australia in 1969, where he worked in Sydney driving a bulldozer until his friends convinced him to send demos of his songs to the famous Albert Productions label, home of the Easybeats. At that point Mulry had only considered writing songs for others and had to be talked into recording one of the songs, "Julia," himself. It made the charts after being released as a single through EMI subsidiary Parlophone in 1970. Harry Vanda and George Young of the Easybeats wrote his next hit single, "Falling in Love Again," which was released a year later. Also in 1971 he briefly moved back to England, where he signed a contract with Blue Mountain Records. Unimpressed with his name and the bulldozer-driver image that had helped him in Australia, they convinced him to release his sole single with them, "Ain't It Nice," under the name Steve Ryder. Failing to dent the English charts, he returned to Sydney and his career as Ted Mulry soon after, releasing the albums Falling in Love Again and I Won't Look Back.

Tex Morton

Tex Morton (1916-1983), country-and-western singer, vaudeville performer and actor, was born on 30 August 1916 at Nelson, New Zealand, eldest of four children of Bernard William Lane, postal clerk, and his wife Mildred, née Eastgate, and was named Robert William. Bobby attended Haven Road and Nelson Boys’ schools and Nelson College. By the age of 14 he had begun his singing career as a busker. Within two years he played in a travelling band, ‘The Gaieties’, and recorded hillbilly songs on aluminium discs; they are some of the earliest songs of this genre to be recorded outside the United States of America.

The Atlantics

One of the greatest instrumental surf groups did not even hail from America. The Atlantics, despite their name, were an Australian combo who not only emulated the sound of California surf music, but ranked among its very best practitioners. Featuring a reverb-heavy, extremely "wet" sound, the Atlantics attacked original material, standards, and movie themes with a nervy blend of precision and over-the-top intensity. As in Dick Dale's music, touches of Middle Eastern influences can be detected in the rhythms of melodies (some members of the group claimed Greek and Egyptian heritage). Their second single, "Bombora," went to the top of the Australian charts in 1963, and the follow-up, "The Crusher," was also a big hit. But Beatlemania spelled commercial death for the Atlantics, as it did for U.S. surf combos, in 1964 and 1965. After several albums and a few more equally fine instrumental singles, the Atlantics became a vocal group in the last half of the '60s, but are most renowned for their instrumental recordings.

The Bushwackers

The Bushwhackers, initially named "The Heathcote Bushwhackers", Australia's first bush band were arguably the catalyst for Australia's folk revival of the 1950s. They performed from 1952 to 1957, when founder John Meredith disbanded the group and its members dispersed into other activities. (An unrelated group with a similar sounding name, "The Bushwackers", formed in Victoria, Australia in 1971 and continues to the present day). Over its relatively brief existence, the group evolved from an initial novelty act to one with a more serious mission of presenting and promoting to Australia its neglected bush song heritage, and laid the foundation for similar groups to follow through the 1960s and to the present.

The Groop

The Groop were an Australian folk, R&B and rock band formed in 1964 in Melbourne, Victoria and had their greatest chart success with their second line-up of Max Ross on bass, Richard Wright on drums and vocals, Don Mudie on lead guitar, Brian Cadd on keyboards and vocals, and Ronnie Charles on vocals. The Wesley Trio formed early in 1964 with Ross, Wright and Peter McKeddie on vocals; they were renamed The Groop at the end of the year.
The Groop's best known hit single "Woman You're Breaking Me" was released in 1967, the band won a trip to United Kingdom but had little success there. Other singles included "Ol' Hound Dog", "Best in Africa", "I'm Satisfied", "Sorry", "Seems More Important to Me" and "Such a Lovely Way".

When The Groop disbanded in 1969, Cadd and Mudie formed Axiom with Glenn Shorrock (later in Little River Band). Cadd was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2007, for his work with The Groop, Axiom and as a solo artist.

The Masters Apprentices

One could easily make the case for designating the Masters Apprentices as the best Australian rock band of the '60s. Featuring singer Jim Keays and songwriter/rhythm guitarist Mick Bower, the band's earliest recordings combined the gritty R&B/rock of Brits like the Pretty Things with the minor-key melodies of the Yardbirds. The compelling "Wars or Hands of Time" and the dreamy psychedelia of "Living in a Child's Dream" were undiscovered classics, although the latter was a Top Ten hit in Australia. Bower left the group after suffering a nervous breakdown in late 1967, and the Masters grew steadily less interesting, moving from flower pop and hard rock to progressive and acoustic sounds. Plagued by instability (undergoing eight personnel changes between 1966 and 1968), the group moved to England in the early '70s, achieving some cult success with progressive rock albums before breaking up in 1972.

The Rajahs

Sydney band that evolved from Dig Richards & The R'Jays, influenced on their own records by Beatlemania. After parting with Dig Richards, the band became Johnny O'Keefe's backing band for a time before establishing themselves as an independent act in the wake of Beatlemania. It was JO'K who suggested their name change to The Rajahs in 1964 and their adoption of turbans as part of their stage gear.

Members:
Lindsay King (guitar vocals)  John Hayton (guitar vocals),
Mike Lawler (bass vocals)  Leon Isackson (drums)
