Melanie Safka - Discography

Melanie Safka  Discography

No talent who came out of Woodstock and who continued actively performing more than a quarter century later remained as closely associated with the 1960s and "flower power" than Melanie. Born Melanie Safka in Astoria, Queens, in 1947, she made her first public appearance at age four on a radio show, later studying at the New York Academy of Fine Arts. After mounting a singing career while in college, she later sang in clubs in Greenwich Village, and was signed to a publishing contract in 1967. She recorded her first single, "Beautiful People," for Columbia Records that same year. Her relationship with the record company was short-lived, however, and after one more single she left the label.

Born To BeIn 1969, she chanced to meet producer Peter Schekeryk, and after a hastily arranged audition, he took charge of her career. Her first album, Born to Be, was recorded and released by Buddah later that same year. On August 16, Melanie took the stage at the Woodstock Music & Art Festival in Bethel, New York; her song "Birthday of the Sun" was later released on the Woodstock 2 album, and 20 years later it was released on video as part of Woodstock: The Lost Performances, alongside the work of Janis Joplin, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the Who.

You have the most comprehensive Melanie collection of anyone I have ever encountered. You obviously appreciate the talent and fortitude of this amazing lady. Most people, even in the music industry, are unaware of the longevity of her career and the extent of her musical output.
Thank you for these albums OG.

Ozzieguy, you simply amaze me with not only the huge collection of any given artist, but sharing generosity. You truly are one of a kind. Thank You so very much for this huge Melanie collection. Like so many others I didn't know that she produced so much music, nor that she did it over such a long period of time. Apparently someone knew - You, and I along with many others are truly grateful for all of your time and effort, along with your caring giving.

Thank You very much,
Mark

I see you liked my homemade cover for the Creative Workshop Sessions bootleg (which originally lacked an included cover). I actually created the cover for my "what-if" follow up to "Sunset and Beginnings" where I pull enough unique material from the sessions to construct a new album.

Fantastic collection as usual. It is a shame that Mediafile is now blocking most of the links.

Thanks Anonymous, it means I have to move them to a better place.

The Garden In The City album was scratch and sniff, I had it when it came out but has disappeared over the years!

You don't realise how much you miss someone until they have gone. Melanie Safka was the first female musician that i bought a vinyl album of. That was once I heard Lay Down and over the years i bought probably close to 20 vinyl albums and always found something on each album that remained special. Terribly sad that she is no longer with us but i bet she is in a better place than the one that our present politicians of all parties have given us.
